KENYA TAEKWONDO JIDOKWAN FEDERATION SCHOOLS SYLLABUS AND GRADING REQUIREMENTS

 Kenya Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation Syllabus for Schools - Ages 4-16



Training Frequency: Once per week


Introduction:

The Kenya Taekwondo Jidokwan Federation syllabus for schools is designed to introduce children between the ages of 4 and 16 to the fundamentals of Taekwondo in a structured and progressive manner. The syllabus aims to develop physical fitness, self-discipline, respect, and confidence while instilling a love for the martial art.


Training Objectives:

1. Develop basic Taekwondo techniques, including stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks.

2. Enhance physical fitness, agility, flexibility, and coordination.

3. Foster discipline, focus, and self-control through structured training.

4. Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect for oneself and others.

5. Provide opportunities for personal growth, achievement, and enjoyment through Taekwondo practice.


Note:

The syllabus is divided into age-appropriate groups to accommodate the varying abilities and developmental stages of children between the ages of 4 and 16.


Age Group 4-6: Little Tigers


1. Warm-up exercises and stretching

2. Basic Taekwondo stances: Horse stance, front stance

3. Introduction to basic blocks: High block, low block

4. Basic kicks: Front kick, roundhouse kick (low height)

5. Introduction to basic Taekwondo etiquette and terminology

6. Games and activities to reinforce learning and enhance coordination


Age Group 7-9: Junior Tigers


1. Warm-up exercises, stretching, and cardio drills

2. Review and refinement of basic stances and blocks

3. Intermediate kicks: Side kick, turning kick (low to mid-height)

4. Introduction to basic sparring drills and self-defense techniques

5. Basic Poomsae (forms): Taeguk Il Jang (1st form)

6. Introduction to Taekwondo philosophy and values


**Age Group 10-12: Young Warriors**


1. Comprehensive warm-up routine, including dynamic stretches and plyometric exercises

2. Advanced stances, blocks, and kicks: Back stance, knife-hand block, hook kick

3. Introduction to advanced sparring drills and combinations

4. Intermediate Poomsae: Taeguk Ee Jang (2nd form)

5. Introduction to breaking techniques and board breaking

6. Emphasis on discipline, focus, and perseverance


Age Group 13-16: Teen Titans


1. Intensive warm-up routine, including agility drills and conditioning exercises

2. Advanced techniques and combinations: Jumping techniques, spinning kicks

3. Advanced sparring drills and strategies

4. Advanced Poomsae: Taeguk Sam Jang (3rd form) and beyond

5. Advanced self-defense techniques and applications

6. Preparation for belt examinations and competitions

This syllabus outlines the requirements for each rank, ensuring that students develop a comprehensive understanding of Taekwondo techniques, forms, sparring, self-defense, and theoretical knowledge as they progress through their martial arts journey.


Grading Structure:

Grading examinations are conducted periodically to assess students' proficiency and readiness to advance to the next rank. The grading process evaluates students' performance in various aspects of Taekwondo practice, including:


1. Technical Skills: Mastery of fundamental and advanced techniques, including stances, blocks, strikes, kicks, and combinations.

2. Forms (Poomsae): Demonstration of prescribed forms with precision, accuracy, and fluidity of movement, reflecting the essence of traditional Taekwondo.

3. Sparring (Kyorugi): Application of offensive and defensive techniques in controlled sparring matches, showcasing tactical awareness, timing, and adaptability.

4. Self-Defense: Execution of self-defense techniques against simulated attacks, demonstrating practical application and effectiveness.

5. Theoretical Knowledge: Understanding of Taekwondo philosophy, history, etiquette, terminology, and rules governing competition.


 Syllabus Outline:


10th Geup (White Belt) to 9th Geup (Yellow Stripe)


- Introduction to Taekwondo fundamentals: Basic stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks.

- Basic self-defense techniques and partner drills.

- White Belt Poomsae: Kibon Il Jang (Basic Form 1).


9th Geup (Yellow Stripe) to 8th Geup (Yellow)


- Refinement of basic techniques and introduction to intermediate skills.

- Intermediate stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks.

- Introduction to basic sparring drills and strategies.

- Yellow Belt Poomsae: Kibon Ee Jang (Basic Form 2).


8th Geup (Yellow) to 7th Geup (Green Stripe)


- Mastery of basic and intermediate techniques.

- Advanced stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks.

- Application of techniques in controlled sparring matches.

- Green Stripe Belt Poomsae: Taeguk Il Jang (1st form) and the previous forms.


7th Geup (Green Stripe) to 6th Geup (Green)


- Mastery of advanced techniques and combinations.

- Advanced sparring drills and combinations.

- Introduction to breaking techniques and board breaking.

- Green Belt Poomsae: Taegeuk Ee Jang (2nd form) and all previous forms.


6th Geup (Green) to 5th Geup ( Blue Stripe)


- Preparation for Blue belt examination.

- Advanced self-defense techniques and applications.

- Blue Stripe Poomsae: Taegeuk Sam Jang (3rd form) and all previous Taegeuks.


5th Geup (Blue Stripe) to 4th Geup (Blue)


- Advanced techniques and combinations.

- Mastery of multiple Poomsae forms.

- Competency in advanced sparring and self-defense.

- Preparation for the Red Belt

- Blue Belt Poomsae: Taegeuk Sa Jang (4th Form) and all the previous Taegeuks.


4th Geup (Blue) to 3rd Geup (Red Stripe)

  1. - Red Stripe (Poomsae): Taegeuk Oh Jang (5th Form) and all previous Taegeuks

  2. The forms performed at the red stripe level typically build upon those learned at earlier ranks and may include more complex sequences and combinations.

  3. - Techniques: Students are tested on a wide range of techniques, including strikes (e.g., punches, kicks), blocks, and defensive maneuvers. They are also required to demonstrate proficiency in executing these techniques with power, accuracy, and proper form.


  4. Self-defense: Students are required to demonstrate their understanding and application of self-defense techniques, including escapes from grabs, holds, and attacks from multiple directions.

  5. Basic knowledge: Students are tested on their understanding of Taekwondo philosophy, etiquette, terminology, and history. This demonstrates their commitment to the martial arts beyond just physical skills.

  6. Physical fitness: Students are tested on, overall physical fitness and conditioning for their success in Taekwondo. Students are expected to demonstrate strength, flexibility, agility, and endurance during the test.


3rd Geup (Red Stripe) to 2nd Geup (Red)

  1. Forms (Poomsae):

    • Students are required to know all previous Taegeuks including Red belt poomsae, which is a sequence of movements that simulate combat scenarios. Taegeuk Yook Jang (6th Form) and knowledge of the previous forms
  2. Techniques:

    • Mastery of basic techniques continues to be a focus at the red belt level. This includes various strikes (punches, kicks), blocks, stances, and footwork. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in executing these techniques with power, accuracy, and proper form.
  3. Sparring (Gyeorugi):

    • Controlled sparring is an integral part of Taekwondo training. Students are evaluated on their ability to apply techniques learned in a dynamic, simulated combat situation. This will include offensive and defensive strategies, footwork, timing, and control.
  4. Self-defense:

    • Students are supposed to demonstrate their understanding and application of self-defense techniques against common attacks, such as grabs, holds, and strikes. This may include escapes, counters, and effective use of leverage and positioning.
  5. Breaking (Kyukpa):

    • Breaking involves breaking boards or other materials using various techniques, such as strikes or kicks. The boards or bricks to be broken should be 5 and above for this category.
  6. Knowledge:

    • Students are tested on their understanding of Taekwondo philosophy, etiquette, terminology, and history. This demonstrates their commitment to the martial arts beyond just physical skills.
  7. Physical fitness:

    • Overall physical fitness and conditioning are essential for success in Taekwondo. That is why during the grading, students are tested on their strength, flexibility, agility, and endurance necessary for performing techniques effectively.

2nd Geup (Red) to 1st Geup (Black Stripe)

- Advanced kicking, blocking, and punching techniques

- Advanced Self-defense techniques

- Advanced attacking, counter-attacking and general sparring techniques.

- Knowledge of all previous Taegeuks including Black Stripe Poomsae: Taegeuk Chil Jang (7th Form)

- Leadership skills and basic coaching skills required in this category.


2nd Geup (Black Stripe) to 1st Geup (National Black Belt)

- Advanced Knowledge of Taekwondo history, tenets, commandments terminologies, and all Taekwondo rules both in the dojang and outside the dojang.

- Ability to coach during and in the absence of the Senior coach(Master).

- Poomsae: Ability to perform all previous taegeuks including the mandatory poomsae for Black Belt: Taegeuk Pal Jang (8th Form)
